This course provides listening, note taking, and speaking skills development for the American university context. By the end of the course, students will be better able to understand and take notes on lectures covering a variety of academic topics, take an active role in classroom discussions, and give formal presentations.
Prerequisites: A minimum score of 50 on the TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT).

ESLG F215 Applying English Grammar in Everyday Life

This course provides opportunities for international students to engage in classroom discussions on English grammar, vocabulary and pragmatics with native speakers of English. It is specifically designed for short-term exchange students or recently arrived international students who are developing their English proficiency.
Prerequisites: A minimum score of 46 on the TOEFL Internet based test (iBT).

Engaging in English conversation. For students who do not speak English as their first language, but who can understand and follow simple instructions in English. The emphasis is on large quantities of comprehensible English, and building student confidence in understanding and speaking it.

Language experience approach and other methods are used to increase students' abilities and to build their confidence in reading English as it is encountered everyday. For students whose first language is not English, this class provides an opportunity to develop the skills involved in reading simple passages in English.

This intermediate reading course for non-native speakers of English includes the development of intermediate skills and strategies in reading comprehension, fluency and critical thinking; intermediate academic vocabulary and the application of level-appropriate grammar and mechanics; and the ability to respond to academic readings through oral discussions and writing short texts.
Prerequisites: Permission of instructor.

This intermediate writing course for English language learners focuses on the use of intermediate level grammar and academic vocabulary in writing descriptive and narrative paragraphs. Emphasis is placed on beginning to use the steps of the writing process, responding to readings using quotation and level-appropriate self-correction.
Prerequisites: Permission of instructor.
