Admission Requirements

Students entering the accelerated master's in applied linguistics must:

  • be admitted into the B.A. in linguistics;
  • have completed a minimum of 24 credits toward the B.A. in linguistics, including LING F101X, LING F318, LING F320, LING F315, LING F302; and ENGL F318
  • have a minimum 3.0 GPA overall and a 3.5 GPA in linguistics;
  • obtain a letter of recommendation from a current linguistics faculty member who is willing to serve as chair of their graduate committee;
  • have junior standing.

Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcomes are specific, measurable statements that define the knowledge and skills students will gain by the end of the program.

Graduates of this program will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic concepts and major movements within the field of linguistics
  • Focus on one area of interest within linguistics and write a final project exploring this area
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of two languages other than English
  • Receive a well-rounded education that enables them to pursue a career related to their major field or to enter a graduate program of study
  • Communicate at a graduate level in oral and written form
  • Acquire a comprehensive understanding of their area of concentration including its current theoretical perspectives, and research methodologies
  • Produce professional reports and/or publishable papers
  • Independently design and conduct archival, laboratory and/or field research
  • Be satisfied that their training in linguistics provided useful skills for employment, and/or they will seek to continue their education at the graduate level, and/or they will be satisfied that their education has met other personal objectives
