Department Overview
The general academic and technical program at the UAF Community & Technical College is the academic home for the associate of arts and the apprenticeship technologies degrees. The program also offers the recreation program and general education courses that support associate of applied science and certificate requirements.
The associate of arts degree is a rigorous program of study for students who eventually intend to transfer to a bachelor’s degree program. The degree may serve as a career starting point or stepping stone to a bachelor’s program.
Apprenticeship Technologies is a degree completion program specifically designed for individuals who are in the process of completing or have completed a formal apprenticeship program and who are interested in earning a degree to prepare for leadership and management positions within their trade or occupation.
The recreation program offers classes for all levels in dance, fitness, martial arts, swimming, skiing, yoga, and more. Classes are offered every semester at various locations throughout the Fairbanks community to provide students, faculty, staff, and community members with an opportunity to stay active and fit while earning college credit.

A.A., Associate of Arts
The Associate of Arts degree is offered at all UAF campuses. The degree offers a rigorous program of study for the serious student who eventually intends to transfer to a bachelor’s degree program. The degree may serve as a starting point for a career or as a stepping stone to a bachelor’s program. You may earn only one A.A. degree.
Minimum Requirements for Associate of Arts Degree: 60 credits
A.A.S., Apprenticeship Technologies
The A.A.S. degree in apprenticeship technologies provides career and technical training and supporting coursework to prepare students for the rapidly changing global workplace. The program also helps Alaska industries by training workers who can meet increasing certification requirements that reflect complex business and industrial standards.
The apprenticeship technologies program is a 60-credit A.A.S. degree delivered collaboratively through UAA, UAF and UAS. The practical integration of general coursework and training for vocational-technical trades specifically reflects the university's commitment to high-quality instruction and public service. Individuals earning this degree must complete a formal apprenticeship program and hold journey-level status in trades or occupations (including occupational license or occupational certificate) recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Training and Employment Administration.
Students declaring a major in apprenticeship technologies must present documentation of acceptance into an apprenticeship program meeting the requirements of the U.S. Department of Labor, Training and Employment Administration. The appropriate College of Indigenous Studies campus will review the documentation and may recommend up to 38 credits of coursework following completion of all courses listed below. Students are encouraged to begin the required courses while completing the apprenticeship program to expand the quality and breadth of the program. Students who complete this program may be eligible to enroll in the B.S. technology degree program at UAA or the B.A.A.S. degree program at UAF.

Exploration of the Deaf-World through various lenses provided by multidisciplinary fields of anthropology, sociology, history and cultural studies. Deaf history in America from 1800 to 1950, this course addresses the emergence, growth and survival of America's Deaf community. This course is designed as a thorough exploration of the literary traditions in the deaf community. Provides students with a survey of the wide variety of recreational experiences available in Interior Alaska. Course consists of outdoor field trip activities and field prep sessions focused on safety, planning, gear and logistics for each outdoor field trip. Acceptable risks include hiking, snowshoeing and skiing up steep hills with a backpack up to 40 pounds for 4-6 miles of rough terrain with natural and manmade obstacles. Camping out in Alaska winter weather at 0 degrees or colder. Dealing with snowstorms, wind, ice and mud while out. Driving risks may include slick and snowy roads, poor visibility and wildlife. Students must be willing to travel in inclement weather, have wet feet, do creek crossings, deal with bugs and travel over steep and unstable terrain.
Prerequisites: Students must be 18 years of age to enroll and must be in adequate physical condition to carry a 40+ pound pack over rough terrain for a weekend backpack, paddle a canoe for 4-5 hours and participate in cold weather winter activities.
Special Notes: Due to the nature of outdoor travel, there are certain risks in this class.
