Obtaining a Disability Accommodation

UAF Disability Services provides students with access to academic courses and opportunities, through temporary or permanent accommodations. Accommodations are available to students on the Fairbanks campus, as well as on the Bristol Bay, Chukchi, Interior Alaska, Kuskokwim, Northwest, Community and Technical College, and College of Indigenous Studies campuses. The process begins with a request from the student, after which, an interactive process will take place to determine if reasonable accommodations can be implemented.

Complaints About Accommodations

Complaints About Accommodation Denials

If a student feels Disability Services wrongly denied a reasonable disability accommodation request, they must first seek to resolve the matter informally with Disability Services (e.g., utilizing any options for reconsideration and/or writing to the director to request a reconsideration). If attempts to resolve the issue informally fail, a complaint can be made to the Office of Rights, Compliance and Accountability. ORCA will conduct an administrative review in accordance with Board of Regents Policy and University Regulation on Services for Students with Disabilities.

Complaints About Approved Accommodations Not Being Implemented

If Disability Services approves an accommodation but a university employee refuses to implement it, that could represent a type of unlawful discrimination. Discrimination complaints can also be made to the Office of Rights, Compliance and Accountability. After a complaint is received, you will have an opportunity to speak with an investigator, after which, an administrative investigation might be started.
