M.Ed. Degree and Postbaccalaureate Licensures

The School of Education is dedicated to culturally responsive, place-based teaching, counseling, research and service for Alaska’s diverse communities. To fulfill our commitment to enhancing educational opportunities for the state's rural and Indigenous populations, faculty actively and knowledgeably utilize educational technology to deliver School of Education programs through distance delivery strategies, as well as in person.

The School of Education offers programs in elementary education, secondary education and special education at both the postbaccalaureate and Master of Education degree levels. We also offer a Master of Education Degree in School Counseling or Clinical Mental Health Counseling and a graduate certificate in School Counseling. 

LICENSURE INFORMATION

UAF education programs are approved by the Alaska State Board of Education standards and accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation.

The UAF School of Education is approved by the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development to recommend its students for Alaska licensure as elementary, secondary, or special education teachers and school counselors. 

The State of Alaska requires that all initial applicants for a teaching certificate pass a Basic Competency Exam (BCE) from the list of exams accepted by the Alaska State Department of Education and Early Development.

In addition, Content Area Examinations (Praxis II) are required for the Initial 2-3 Year, Professional, and Master teaching certificates. A list of accepted exams and passing scores is available on the website of the Alaska State Department of Education and Early Development.

Minimum Requirements for:

Art K-12 Postbaccalaureate Licensure: 36 credits;
Elementary Postbaccalaureate Licensure: 39 credits;
Secondary Postbaccalaureate Licensure: 34 credits;
Special Education K-12 Postbaccalaureate Licensure: 24-27 credits;
Master of Education: 30-60 credits
