Introduction: providing village health care with remote supervision of physician. Topics: anatomy/function; disease concepts; CHA standard of care; use of CHA/P Manual; history-taking; physical exam; lab tests; reporting; charting; medication administration. Clinical experiences prepare student to evaluate health problems of children and adults. Plus 200-hour component at students' village clinic.

Prerequisites: Employed as CHA by a health corporation.

CHP F132      Community Health Aide II

Offered As Demand Warrants

Reinforces problem-oriented patient encounter process. Includes patient education, introduction to prenatal and well child care, sexually transmitted diseases, HIV, substance abuse, mental illness and death and dying issues. Session I material and emergency care are reinforced and expanded upon. Includes 200-hour field component at the student's village clinic.

CHP F134      Community Health Aide IV

Common patient problems within the body systems are reviewed with focus on assessment skills and management plans. Session III content is reviewed. Topics: Follow-up care for patients with chronic illness; diabetes; injury prevention; tuberculosis; cancer; older adult/elder care; environmental health, food/water/rabies; clinic management. Plus 200-hour component at students' village clinic.

CHP F135      Community Health Aide Preceptorship
2 Credits

Offered As Demand Warrants

Supervised primary care clinical experience. Minimum of 30 contact hours of direct patient care required. Students provide patient care in a variety of clinical settings including outpatient (acute and emergency care), prenatal, well child and chronic care clinics. Additional experiences are scheduled with the referral center (hospital) departments.

CHP F203      Clinical Update for Community Health Practitioners

Review, update and reinforcement of knowledge and skills taught in CHP F131, CHP F132, CHP F133 and CHP F134. Emphasis is on patient evaluation skills, use of the manual, patient treatment plan, medicines, prenatal care, well-child care, chronic patient care and emergency care. Clinical training is provided. CHP F207      Maternal and Infant Health

CHP F208      Communicable Diseases

Expands concepts in relation to diagnosis, management and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. Skills taught include male and female genitalia exam, pelvic exam, pap smear, gonorrhea culture and chlamydia culture. Prevention and patient education are emphasized.

CHP F210      CHAM Use and Documentation

Review/explore many types of patient encounters encompassed by scope of practice of the Alaska CHA/CHPs. Focus is on professional standard of care issues and provision of competent and documentation of patient encounters. Emphasis on proper use of CHA/P Manual (CHAM) to conduct and document patient encounter and its legal significance. Special restrictions: Employed as a Community Health Aide by a Native Tribal Health Organization.

CHP F211      Health Education

Methods and philosophy of health education, use and sources of audiovisual materials, presentation planning and participation in school and community health programs are included. A variety of teaching methods including role playing for individual and group presentations permit CHPs to practice their health education knowledge and skills.

CHP F212      Diabetes: Primary Prevention and Village Medical Care

Pathophysiology, primary prevention and follow-up treatment of diabetes. Topics: Type I and Type II diabetes; problem of Type II diabetes in rural Alaska; primary prevention of Type II diabetes; CHA/CHP role in the village health care system; village medical care and referral; patient education; emergency care; and, diabetes medications.

CHP F214      Cancer: Risks, Diagnosis and Treatment

Causes and facts about cancer in the Alaska Native population. Includes cancer risk factors, healthy lifestyle behaviors and the importance of early screening. Presents cancer diagnosis and treatment. Explores pain management, loss and grief. Includes self-care, stress and burnout issues for family and caregivers.

CHP F215      Death and Dying

Focuses on primary care issues relating to dying and death. Topics: theories of grief and loss; improving individual coping skills in loss/grief; care of terminally ill patient; suicide; euthanasia; traumatic death; and, neonatal death. Cultural perspectives on dying, body preparation, burial rites, advanced directives, death certificates and legal issues reviewed.

CHP F220      Women's Health: Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening

Review: anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of female breasts and genitals, with identification of risk factors as they relate to development of breast and cervical cancer. Emphasis: prevention and early detection. Skills: breast and genital history taking, examination including Pap, chlamydia and gonorrhea specimen collection, development of appropriate assessments and plans.

CHP F250      Current Issues in Rural Health Care

Selected current issues in medical education intended for, but not limited to, community health aides/practitioners with emphasis on expanding concepts relating to understanding, diagnosis and management of illnesses common to rural Alaskan communities. A.S. degree.

Special Notes: Community Health majors may apply up to a maximum of three credits towards the F200-level major specialty requirements for an A.
